Gather WisdomDecember 31, 2016
Oh my goodness, I can hardly believe it's time to say farewell to 2016 as we usher in the New Year! I recall my father telling us all long ago that with each passing year, time seems to gather momentum like a runaway train traveling down a long, steep mountain at lightening speed. Don't attempt to catch "it", he implored. Don't waste time trying to keep up with the mad pace of life that may be whirling and spinning around you. Find your own rhythm that matches the life you want to live. That way you'll find it much easier to stop and savor the moments that are most important, was his sage advice.
Dad has often stated he wished he had done just that when we were all young children still living at home. With age came greater awareness for my father as he slowed down in later years to enjoy more time with loved ones and friends. But isn't that the case for most of us? Hindsight usually is 20/20. Not long ago he mentioned to me how he feels regret and great sorrow that he does not have any memories of our early family life, except those brought to mind through all the photographs and the many home movies that were accumulated over time. I told him that I could relate and offered him my understanding of this predicament.
I explained that most parents likely experience this same dilemma of not being able to recall all of the special or even ordinary moments when their children were growing up. There is usually a lot going on for most of us in the course of each day, so much to take care of with just doing the best we can at any given moment in time - children or no children. There's certainly a learning curve to figuring out how to balance one's personal life and professional workload for the benefit of all affected by our choices, including ourselves.
I've greatly appreciated the wisdom he offered when I was a young mother about not trying to slow down time, but to discover a way to dance to the beat of my own drum, the one that is most harmonious and compatible for me. The one that fills me up and makes my heart sing. Little did I realize at the time what a wonderfully powerful influence it would have on me and how I would later encourage my three sons to approach their own lifepath and decisions in the same way. Another little pearl of wisdom gathered from my father that is mine to tuck away for posterity - priceless treasures of the heart.
As I reflect back over the past twelve months, there seems to be a common thread of unrest, distress and uneasiness in regard to numerous occurrences around the world which brought conflict, turbulence and dissatisfaction to many. Not that we haven't experienced much of the same in years past, but the accumulated events of 2016 seemed to have created a tipping point for a greater discontent among a large portion of the earth's populace.
About a month ago I received an e-mail from Derek Rydall (the teacher of an in depth program I finished recently). He had some words of wisdom which impacted me in a meaningful way regarding the world events which seem to have contributed to greater divisiveness and discord instead of unification and harmony among people around the globe.
Derek began by stating, "Life is never happening to you, it's happening for you. Always. Forever. No exceptions. The reason is, that the only purpose to life is to express more life!"
He went on to say that it's easy to believe this concept when all is flowing smoothly the way we'd like them to or have envisioned as our preferred outcomes. It's when things don't go the way we think is best or seem to have gotten out of hand in uncontrollable ways that we are called upon to take strong and powerful action which may include prayer, affirmations, and meditation that support optimistic and positive results for the whole. I completely agree that we are at a crossroads where we need to put our money where our mouth is, so to speak, and back up our highest hopes and wishes for peace and harmony among all people. We can accomplish this task with an unyielding commitment to practicing what many have taught throughout the ages to be the highest and greatest tool for healing our wounds - any and all wounds no matter the size. And that powerful tool is Love.
The events of the past year have shown up to reveal to us what has been lurking for some time beneath the surface of our collective consciousness. It is the unhealed fear that lies at the very core of all the intolerance, the separation, the narrow-mindedness and more. All have been hiding in the shadows begging to be examined and brought into the light for healing, transformation, and restoration.
Our first and most important task is to proceed by loving ourselves fully and completely. Loving all parts of the self, without exception, scars and all. The next step is extending that unconditional love to all others inclusively - everyone and everything. Then it's on to expressing gratitude and blessing all these events for showing up to expose what is ready and waiting to be transmuted and converted, integrated back into the wholeness of the highest vibration, which is love. For love always trumps fear and is the only thing that is real. That is inevitably and conclusively the highest choice and the greatest wisdom of all.
My wish for each of you as you ponder all that has inspired, impressed and impacted you in 2016 is that you gather wisdom from your experiences and newfound insights. Tuck it all away in a safe place in your heart and carry it forward into the future of untold adventures waiting for you in the days and months ahead in 2017 - Happy New Year to ALL!
