A JOYful ImpactJune 30, 2015
We don't meet people by accident. They are meant to cross our path for a reason. All relationships, whether it be an encounter that lasts a few moments with a stranger in an elevator, a few minutes chatting with the cashier at the grocery store or those that last a lifetime, have the power to impact us in a myriad of ways. Surely you can recall how perhaps a favorite teacher, a faithful friend or a beloved family member affected your life in a powerful way. We are all connected and we each have the opportunity to make a positive difference every day just by being who we are meant to be, sharing the unique gifts and talents we possess. One such person who places high on my list of amazing and influential people I've known, passed away just recently on June 13. Her name was Harriet.
Harriet was born prematurely in May of 1929 in a small town in northern Minnesota. She weighed less than 3 pounds at birth. Her mother and aunt wrapped her up and put her in a small box next to the chickens by the heat stove and Harriet survived. She not only survived, she thrived. All her life Harriet never backed down from a challenge or a goal, so you might say her "can do" spirit became an integral part of who she was and all that she accomplished during her lifetime. All who knew her were aware that she always handled or completed whatever task or trial life set before her with grace and style.
I was privileged and blessed to know Harriet for most of my life. She now resides in a very special place in my heart. You see, she and my mother met in the fourth grade back in Minnesota and soon became best friends. An amazing side note here is that Harriet and my mom and their respective families ended up moving to my hometown of Redlands, CA in 1957. The universe had a hand in conspiring on their behalf to keep these best friends as close as could be.
During her beautiful memorial service, her oldest daughter spoke of the many lovely attributes Harriet possessed. She was a strong, determined, loving and caring woman. She adored life and everyone in it! She often said that she never met a stranger as she made friends with everyone wherever she went. She had a rare desire to keep in touch with just about everyone she ever knew. And she did her best to make that happen.
Harriet's daughter went on to relay what her mother believed was truly important in life and imparted to her children. She taught them to live their lives with conviction in their faith, to have patience and a positive attitude, that family comes first, to believe the best in people and to never ever give up on the ones you love. She showed them how to be happy with what they have, to share for the benefit of others, to be kind to all and that the simple things in life are truly the best.
Harriet's family often discussed how she was able to keep on going during the last six years just after her dear husband passed away as she developed many health challenges. She had been put on hospice about 5 years ago but that did not last long as Harriet continued to rally in her faith and positive spirit and was taken off hospice a few months later. With kidney problems and a weak heart the doctors often gave her instructions of things they believed would not be wise to undertake in her condition. One such directive was to stay put in California and not fly back to her beloved family cabin in Minnesota where she had spent every summer since the early 1960's. She was determined not to let her doctors keep her from living a full life her way, so she ignored them. Her last visit was this past summer of 2014. Her daughter said the family concluded that she just collected a sliver of love that everyone had given her over the years and used it to propel forward in her quest to keep on living each day with zeal and gusto until the very end!
Harriet lived her life with purpose and JOY. She had a zest for life that was truly contagious. She was one of a kind for sure. And for me, and so many others, she was an exemplary role model for living life to the fullest with great love and endless pizzazz!
I can't begin to express my gratitude for Harriet being one of those rare and special people who have crossed my path and impacted my life in such a powerful and JOYful way! Her legacy will live on in my heart and will continue to inspire me to keep on keeping on with JOY no matter what I'm doing. We all need role models like Harriet ... and if I can touch the lives of others with a fraction of the limitless love and infinite JOY that Harriet shared, I will consider my life well lived indeed!

Quotes to Ponder
Some people come into our lives and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never ever the same.
Let no one ever come to you without leaving happier.
People come into our lives for a reason.
Some choose to stay with us till the end.
Some just pass us by, just fleeting to touch us the right way.
A few leave their imprint on our souls.

When you meet anyone, remember that it is a holy encounter. As you see him, you will see yourself. As you treat him, you will treat yourself. Never forget this, for in him you will find yourself or lose yourself.
