Resilience with a Capital "R"October 31, 2014
True resilience is the ability to recover readily from adversity and hardship. It's about cultivating an endurance to go the distance while taking things in stride when life gets tough. To be able to show up with poise and composure regardless of what is going on - that is surely the meaning of resilience.
We are each totally and completely responsible for our own life. All the difficult, exasperating and painful experiences that come along during your time on this earth are life's way of urging you to release the past, heal your wounds and make yourself whole. It's a wakeup call and an opportunity for you to understand how and when you were conditioned so that you can alter or delete your programming.
Every single challenge we bump into has the power to bring us to our knees. But what is more distressing than the blow itself is our fear that we won't survive it. Our fear causes us to go into panic mode and we get knocked off our center. But the only way to withstand the setback is to adjust your position. You can't avoid life's daily speed bumps. No one can. It's part of the scenery in the play of life. These experiences are gifts that force us to step back or perhaps to the right or the left as we pursue a new center of gravity. Don't resist the speed bumps of life. Let them help you adjust your equilibrium and bring you back into balance.
True balance resides in the present moment. When you feel unsure of yourself and you've lost your composure, that's your clue to bring yourself back to your center in present time. In this moment of now you'll be able to find your stability on higher ground. As you release your fear, the guidance, answers and support you need will come into view. You will have access to a clarity that was not available to you earlier. When you face your fears you find your true strength.
Wherever you are on your life path you are bound to be faced with challenges along the way. It is truly a blessing to be able to endure them, to be able to continue climbing up the mountain, knowing that you WILL survive the journey one step at a time. Every single experience is a valuable teacher if you choose to see the wisdom it has to offer. All of our hurdles have significance and importance in cultivating our strengths. If we are open to learning from them, it becomes the difference between moving onward and upward or staying stuck in the muck.
What looks like a detour is most likely the universe pointing you in a new and better direction. Anything and everything can be a miracle if you choose to see it that way. As we look back on our lives we frequently recognize the roadblocks that we thought we'd never be able to overcome, as stepping stones that allowed us to gain a greater awareness and a fresh perspective.
I recently heard Elizabeth Gilbert state, "Never waste your suffering." She went on to explain that it's always our job to learn from our pain and then transform it or it just becomes wasted suffering. One method of converting it into something beneficial is to ask yourself whenever you come up against a difficult situation or challenge, "What is this here to teach me? How am I a match for this experience?" If you are part of it, you helped create it. You hold yourself 100% accountable for your participation without placing blame on anyone, including yourself.
When you can see difficulties for what they are, you gain a sense of trust that the universe is guiding you and you never lose faith that you are on your way to where you want to go. All you're meant to become begins where you're standing this very moment. Learning to appreciate your lessons, challenges or setbacks as valuable happenstances to your best future is a strong signal that you're moving ahead on the precise course that was meant just for you.
The power and strength of resilience comes from your ability to face your resistance and walk through it. It does not mean that you never have doubts or fears. You most surely will. But in the darkest hours you have the faith, the knowing and the trust that things will work out for the highest good, even when you can't even catch a glimmer of the light at the end of the tunnel. It's about digging deep and clinging to the amazing resolve that you possess below the surface of your doubts and fears. Our most profound life lessons are most often found in the greatest challenges that we confront.
There can be no building of strength or developing of the resilience muscle without adversity, trials and tribulations and sometimes pain. These experiences are how you shape and develop your determination, courage and the resolve to continue on during the hard times. You cultivate the belief deep in your heart that no matter what, you can handle anything that comes your way and you really are going to be alright. You discover that you can challenge yourself to find your way out of any situation because you've learned you can count on yourself to follow through ... and you'll make it out alive!
It's truly amazing when you take a glimpse back at your personal history and realize what an amazing ride it's been because of everything you've been through and you can proclaim with enthusiasm the words made famous by Elton John, "I'm still standing ... yeah, yeah, yeah!" Now that's Resilience with a capital "R" ... woo-hoo!
